Where is the girl group’s place on the pop pedestal in today’s world? What can happen when the girl group, is girl made? 

That story starts in Liverpool with Katya, Maria, Thea, Mia and Lil – aka Girl Group. The five women met while studying at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, and have lived together ever since. Their debut single on new label Boys Boys Boys, “Yay! Saturday,” is a bratty bass-driven introduction to the girl group who write and produce everything themselves. Celebrating the messiness of womanhood, their name —Girl Group— is a deliberate reclamation. “We want to embrace and subvert what people think of as industry-made girl groups,” says Girl Group. Their ethos extends beyond the band itself, creating a community of women in music, ensuring every aspect of their creative journey is female-led—from songwriting and production to visuals and collaborations. The official video for “Yay! Saturday” was filmed on a Saturday-night-out-in-Liverpool by directors Jasmine De Silva and Caitlin Ricaud, which starts at their flat share above the local newsagents, and ends at the local fast food shop: like every good night out with your best mates. 

Girl Group’s collaborative spirit is integral to the band — every member contributes lyrics and melodies, resulting in a sound that crosses-genres and eras. Their influences range from the lyrical sharpness of Lily Allen and Wet Leg, to the sonic experimentation of Charli XCX and Pink Pantheress. Championing joy, vulnerability, and raw, unfiltered girlhood, Girl Group started playing at Liverpool house-parties and will continue this tradition with upcoming parties and live performances. “We’re all very opinionated and very feminist—but we had gone to this big music institution that still felt very closed out of this guy’s club. And these were friends too! If we were in the studio, it was like we were guests,” says Maria from Girl Group. Feeling like outsiders in the spaces they were primed to make magic wasn’t going to work, so the women began having sessions themselves, working on their production skills together and playing around. This first introduction to the girldom of Girl Group is a rallying call that’s only going to get louder with each release.
